Tile Layout Desk / FIELD NOTES

Calculating tiles and boxes to buy

Dividing room area by tile area gives a theoretical reference. It does not describe edge cuts or the actual quantity required by a particular layout.

Our conservative estimate

The calculator counts pieces inside the room outline. Every cut piece is assumed to come from a fresh tile. It does not assume interchangeable offcuts: pattern direction, saw kerf and breakage can limit reuse.

A worked order

For a plan with 35 pieces, a 10% allowance gives 38.5, rounded up to 39 tiles. At 4 tiles per box, round up to 10 boxes, or 40 tiles. The allowance is adjustable; 10% is an example, not a guarantee for every project.

What the total excludes

Skirting, thresholds, niches, steps and pattern matching are not modeled. There is no separate repair stock beyond your allowance. Check the units on the packaging and ask your supplier about shade or dimensional differences between batches.

Area and grout

The displayed area is the room outline’s interior, including joints. Tile count comes from the actual grid rather than area division alone. Compare the centering options before finalizing your order.
